Challenge: [Use "Footsteps echoed in the darkness....." as the first line of a poem or story]

Tears welled in her eyes, As she opened the door of the black sedan. The young man took his suit case, And with a smile gave her a hug. Footsteps echoed in the darkness As she watched him walk down the path. Seemed like yesterday she would walk with him His little hand in hers. Grown up and college bound, now, A proud smile touches her face. He is ready to face the world And all the wonders that await. Terrie Dominguez

Footsteps echoed in the darkness as I crouched in my closet hidden in a
dark corner surrounded by my toys and stuffed animals.
A pause outside the bedroom door echoes in the silence of the night, I
close my eyes and hold my breath, biting my lip till I feel my teeth break
the tender skin.
Straining to hear through the deafening silence, the sound of the door
knob turning is heard, my heart speeds its beating and the defeaning
silence is joined with the sound of my blood rushing through my veins.

The door opens and his voice echoes in 'You asleep?'

Shhhhhh I do not answer, I am hidden.. scared silent.

"Oh come now, where have you hidden? come on out, I want to play"

I close my eyes, press my lips against my knees as my arms wrap around my
legs hugging them close to my chest, I do not make a sound

I hear the click of my closet light and see the shadows of the brightness
behind my closed eyes.

Suddenly I feel the stuffed animals fall away from me and hands grasping
my arms.

The sounds of silence echoe deeply in my mind as I drift away into a place
where footsteps never echo in the darkness.
