![]() Challenge: [Write a poem or short story starting with the line: "Nothing moved in the darkness....."] Nothing moved in the darkness, or at least nothing she could see in the night that surrounded her, smothering her in its suffocating darkness. She shivered in her cloak, drawing the warm woolen folds closer to her in order to keep out the chill night air and whatever dangers there might be. She shouldn't be out here, on this night. She knew this. But the lure of her lovers charms and skills in bed drew her out of her safe home for the pleasures of the evening. Her footsteps echoed on th cobblestones, making her cringe with each dull thud. The night creatures were out, looking for food, she hoped she could reach her lovers home before they found her. Out of the darkness she saw him, his blond hair seeming to glow, a glimmer of sunlight in the night. He was beautiful to behold, his looks surpassing her lover, who was the handsomest man in town. His eyes though, were what stood out the most, black, pure black. They enchanted her, bewitched her. She stared deep into those dark depths, so like the darkness of the night all around her. He walked closer to her, filling her with ecstasy as those eyes neared her. He placed his hands on her shoulders once he was near enough and gently drew her to him, a kiss was placed on her red lips before they trailed down to her neck. Than she knew nothing but pain..... They never realized she was in the house nor did they? It was her favorite hiding spot. Her mommy and daddy yelled a lot. It was about the bills, who mommy was sleeping with or who daddy was running around with. I tried to draw pictures or sing a new song to distract them but it never worked. Malani always was yelled at or had things thrown at her. But something different happened tonight. Daddy came home angry. Mommy had disrespected him for the last time. Daddy had a gun. He pointed it at Mommy. She ran into the bedroom. Malani ran to her chair. Her daddy switched off the main power. It was daddy’s version of hide and seek. Normally he did not try and find her. But he was cleaning his slate. Malani decided to sit in the chair instead of behind it. She remembers hearing three shots. There was a bright light that came towards her. She then heard two shots Malani then heard silence until the sirens, many strange voices and flashing lights. The voices said over and over how horrible and terrible it was. Then they found her. But it wasn’t like usual. She heard something unzip. A firefighter lifted her into a plastic bag. Malani was scared. This was new to her. Her momma did not come find her. Instead the bag zipped closed. Malani started to cry as she realized nothing moved in this new darkness. The entire contents of this site is copyrighted.
