Ara'Shi's Calling
Written by Jessa

Ara'Shi felt the calling as she picked the plump blue fruit from its orchid bound tree.
Her feathers Tingled and itched with the urge to fly and fly.
Her muscles twitched with the desire to swing and tap and bounce.
She caught herself humming ancient tunes rarely sung as she cored and stewed the flesh of the fruits.
It wasn't time yet, she knew. The wind did not blow right, its breathy coldness too chill for her needs. The moons hung wrong in the night sky. She would wait.
The call grew stronger, as she carved the meat and set it to smoke and dry.
Her wings rustled, twitching and flexing. Her eyes bright and her face flushed.
The sight of her prompted smiles from the elders as she sat in the clothes house to spin thread as they wove cloth.
She hung laundry with her mother who would smile knowingly.
Frost touched the ground, the winds blowing its chill breath through the barren trees as the blue moon rose high and large in the sky.
Her feathers turned dark and thick as they readied themselves for the frozen times ahead.
The call, ever present, muted itself, as if understanding winters message, wait.
She waited as the storehouses were filled, as walls and roofs, windows and doors were readied for the coming cold.
She waited as the world was blanketed in white snow.
She waited as the red moon hung distant and low.
She waited through nights and days.
She waited through solitude and gatherings.
At last, the call awake to the melting of snow, to a warmer wind blowing.
At last, it held its breath for the first shoots of grass, the first buds of leaves on the trees.
At last, at last, she spread her wings and flew
